The elections are upon us once again and civic engagement work throughout Indian Country and elsewhere is picking up steam. Most people who work on campaigns do it seasonally, when a big election rolls around, they drop what they are doing and work for a candidate or other campaign in their communities. There are very few individuals in Indian Country that do this sort of work year around. However, there is one young man in New Mexico that is a rising star in this field in Indian Country and his own state. I had a chance to catch up with him at the National Hip Hop Political Convention last month in Chicago.

Meet Keegan King. He is 25 years old, from the Deetseama Village (McCarthy’s) from Acoma Pueblo and currently resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Over the past few years, Keegan has been honing his political skills in the Albuquerque area and is currently leading the efforts of the League of Young Voters (LYV) in New Mexico. The League has become the powerhouse in engaging and mobilizing young voters across the nation and plans to engage more than 80,000 young voters on November 7.
