Art And Music Event To Showcase National Young American Indian ArtistsBOULDER, CO- The Native American Rights Fund (NARF), one of the oldest and most respected American Indian non-profit organizations in the United States, is holding a unique event this Saturday in Boulder that will showcase some of the country's premiere and up and coming Native American artists in honor of Native American Heritage Month.
Artwork by thirteen Native American artists, ages 18-35, from the around the country will be exhibited this Saturday at the NARF "Visions for the Future Benefit Art Show" at the Republic of Boulder. Artists were selected from a national call for entries for works themed around Native American rights, culture, and contemporary issues impacting Indian peoples. Over 130 submissions were received from young artists.
"NARF was overwhelmed by the response to the art show. The amount of talent is extraordinary among this generation of young Native artists, many of whom are on the brink of becoming the next generation of established artists in the country," explained Crystal Echo Hawk, the Assistant Development Director of NARF. Echo Hawk further added that, "The goal of the show is to bridge the voices and perspectives of the older generation represented by NARF, who have been pioneers in the struggle for Native American rights, and those of the younger generations of Native Americans today. Despite the significant progress and victories on behalf of Native American rights over the last three decades, many injustices against Native Americans remain unresolved. Through the art show, NARF wants to encourage the empowerment and engagement of emerging generations of young Native Americans to carry on the important work to defend Native American rights and to continue to strengthen Native sovereignty and cultural lifeways in the 21st century."
Three artists were selected as the Visions For the Future "Best In Show Winners- Duane Dudley (Choctaw), Cara McDonald (Chemehuevi Tribe of CA), and Ryan Red Corn (Osage). All three will be flown to the Art Show Opening and first, second and third places will be announced Saturday evening. The first place winner will receive the "Brummet Echohawk Memorial Award" given in memory of the late and nationally acclaimed Pawnee painter who passed away earlier this year.
